PLM Perspective - January 2005
Visual Collaboration in the Real World
Wouldn't it be great if all the product design software ever developed spoke the same language? Imagine, no data incompatibility issues throughout your whole product lifecycle process - not to mention your entire supply chain. And what if you could easily and instantly distribute just the right type of 3D product geometry and product information to all of your partners, suppliers and customers regardless of what software tools anyone uses? That could dramatically accelerate your product development process, as well as create an increase in product sales. Wouldn't that be great?
Yes, it would. But unless everyone around the world buys all the same software from the same company (as some PLM vendors would advocate) then this is all just a dream, right? Wrong!
Yesterday UGS announced a definitive agreement to acquire Tecnomatix Technologies Ltd., the industry leader in Manufacturing Process Management (MPM) software solutions. This marks a significant milestone in UGS' drive to provide our customers with the industry's best and most comprehensive PLM solutions.
We have had a close working relationship with the Tecnomatix team for several years and with the formal integration of Tecnomatix into UGS, we expect to provide faster development and delivery of an even broader range and depth of digital manufacturing applications that, over time, incorporate the best of our combined technologies. You can read the announcement, with more details about our agreement here.
UGS Selected as Best PLM Vendor
UGS was recently recognized as one of Top 10 Management Software Vendors in China during the Top 100 Management Software Forum in Beijing. The forum was hosted by the Chinese Foreign Trade Economic Association and is China's largest networking symposium to discuss opportunities and solutions for information technology. UGS was also selected as the best PLM vendor. The survey covered more than 1,000 software vendors with input by vendors, media and users. The winners were selected based on outstanding market performance as well as their reputation with clients and professional peers.
Factory Layout and Planning Boosts Mack Trucks' Bottom Line

Mack Trucks, Inc. is one of North America's largest producers of heavy-duty trucks. The company's bulldog mascot, which adorns the hood of all Mack trucks, symbolizes the legendary strength and durability of these vehicles. After being acquired by Volvo, Mack wanted to take advantage of the ensuing reorganization to enhance production efficiency. E-factory solutions helped the company shrink productions costs and optimize plant layouts, saving millions of dollars in unnecessary capital costs.

Transition to 3D Modeling Improves Quality and Shortens Delivery Cycles
Ikegami Tsushinki Co. is a leader in broadcast, communications and data processing equipment. When the company began to experience the limitations of 2D design, they moved to Solid Edge. Today they produce engineering drawings in one-tenth the time it used to take and have halved the time from design to prototype.
Teamcenter Delivers New Program Execution Management Capabilities with Teamcenter Project 5.0
As product lifecycle management applications continue to mature, Program Execution Management has become the enterprise navigator of critical business information. Critical decision support information, an engaging graphical display, and real-time information processing create a management environment that sets the standard for Program Execution Management applications. Read more about Teamcenter Project 5.0, the Teamcenter source for Program Execution Management.

Optimizing the Productivity of High Speed Machines
Global competition is forcing the mold making industry to rethink the way it does business. Despite investing millions of dollars in high-speed machining (HSM) technology, firms for the most part have yet to achieve the true potential of hard milling processes for machining intricate molds and dies. Find out more here about how NX 3 can help you get maximum value from your high speed machining investment.
Building Ergonomics and Posture Prediction into the Design Process

Human modeling enables companies to perform ergonomic studies early in the design process while costs are low. By including this functionality as an integral part of the design process, it allows designers to bring the human mannequin into the assembly process and enables them to consider the design in the true context of its intended use. Now this capability is built into NX 3. Read more here.
NX Nastran Accelerates Momentum
"All industries are desperate for better integration and interoperability of CAE with the rest of their product lifecycle management infrastructure" said Charles Foundyller, CEO, Daratech, Inc. (Cambridge, MA). "NX Nastran is just one example of the terrific position UGS has in its ability to bridge the gap for its customers - gaps that are all too frequent between design and analysis teams in today's product development environments." This month UGS will announce availability of NX Nastran Version 3, which includes a number of new capabilities and enhancements. More information is available here.
