PLM Perspective - October 2004
Cultivating Innovation
It is astounding to think that the manufacturing industry averages only one product success for every 3,000 ideas generated1. Even more astounding is the fact that this proportion has remained virtually unchanged over the past four decades. An upshot of this is that companies waste approximately half of their development budgets on products that never reach the consumer or that fail after commercialization.
These are incredible odds for manufacturers! The issue is not a lack of ideas. The dilemma is capitalizing on ideas.
Studies indicate that innovation is the key to product development success. It's innovation that enables a company to bring products to market that meet customer requirements - products that foster desire. And, it is said that the best innovators are six times more successful.
If there's no shortage of ideas, then how can a company become more innovative in taking advantage of its best ones
Parasolid® Helps ANSYS® Respond to Customers and Expand Opportunities

ANSYS, Inc. develops and globally markets engineering simulation software used by designers and engineers across a broad spectrum of industries, including aerospace, automotive, chemical processing, manufacturing, nuclear, electronics and biomedical. Their customers were asking for a modeling pre-processor that would shrink the prep time for finite element analysis, but creating the software in-house from scratch wasn't feasible. ANSYS leveraged Parasolid to make development of a powerful customer-requested modeling application cost-effective and instantly compatible with more than one million end users.
Teamcenter Helps Chinese Automaker Position for International Competition

Shenyang Brilliance Jinbei Automobile Company is well known in its native land. The company's Zhonghua passenger cars and Hice and Grace minivans are popular at home in the world's fastest growing auto market. But executives at Jinbei have set their sites higher. They want to be competing in the global automobile marketplace within five to ten years. The company has chosen Teamcenter to support its long-term development plan.
Delphi Migrates Manufacturing Engineers to Solids

Delphi Corp. has identified Solid Edge and NX, both from UGS, as core mechanical design tools for the corporation. The Energy and Chassis Systems Division selected Solid Edge computer-aided design software as the solid modeler of choice for machine, fixture, tooling and gauge design. The division has since seen up to 70 percent reduction in CNC programming time, 25-50 percent improvement in the time for drawing updates and a 50 percent time savings in design reviews.
NX 3 - The Culmination of a 3-year Migration

On September 15th, UGS announced the release of its NX 3 digital product development system. David Cohn, publisher and editor-in-chief of Engineering Automation Report and CADCAMNet (two publications from leading industry analyst and consulting firm Cyon Research) profiles key NX 3 enhancements in a recently published article that you can read here. This article, titled NX 3 - The culmination of a 3-Year Migration is the first in a two-part series.
If you are interested in finding out more about NX 3 first hand, please attend one of the many UGS seminars currently being held around the world. Contact your UGS representative or visit the NX Events Web site for more information

Special Events
Training Solutions are Available for I-deas to NX Version-Up Customers
UGS has developed a version-up strategy that will put existing I-deas customers on the path to a successful transition to NX. The approved two-step process is:
- Migrate TDM data to Teamcenter
- Following TDM data migration, migrate I-deas CAD data to NX
Key to the success of this strategy are the customer support solutions available for those I-deas customers migrating to Teamcenter and NX. These solutions include services which provide initial scoping audits, detailed analysis, recommendation and planning audits, data migration and verification, post-migration support services, and training.
The UGS training organization has a customer training solution set available to support customers that are ready to transition to Teamcenter and Unigraphics NX. Developed specifically for existing I-deas customers, targeted training courses have been created to ensure a smooth and productive transition to the NX product suite, including the transition to NX Manager I-deas.
