PLM Perspective - July/August 2004
PLM Momentum Grows
One of the favorite aspects of my work at UGS is the opportunity to meet with our clients and learn about the often amazing work they are doing and results they are achieving. I also enjoy sharing information on our plans for our business and products and exploring how they will benefit our clients' businesses. Two weeks ago I had a particularly exciting opportunity to do both - at our first formal conference with financial and industry analysts and media since becoming an independent company. In his weekly newsletter following the event TechniCom analyst Ray Kurland made an observation about the event that really captures our attitude about what the future now holds for us and our clients. He says, "UGS has come roaring out of their cage."
PLM Technology Helps Launch Revolutionary Jet

Eclipse Aviation is doing something very unusual. The company is creating the revolutionary Eclipse 500, a six-place, twin-turbofan jet aircraft that will cost less than most used turboprops. The challenges associated with this undertaking are enormous. Not only is Eclipse starting from scratch with the aircraft, its factory will be brand new too. To reach its goals of manufacturing at high volume (more than 1,000 aircraft each year) and low cost, the company recognized the need for a strong foundation of PLM technology and is achieving remarkable results with a combination of NX, Teamcenter and E-factory.
NX Helps Drive Growth for CA Engineering and Service, GbmH

When a product needs to meet a client's requirements for quality, distinctive design and fast turnaround, and ultimately for driving company expansion, CA Engineering turned to UGS. CA Engineering and Service GmbH is a design and engineering service provider. A customer wanted a baby stroller suited to the needs of joggers and skaters, with a design that turned heads and production to begin in six months. To meet these demands, CA Engineering implemented NX in order to work virtually as much as possible, simulate performance in the software to detect problems early, and use rapid prototyping for physical models. "Using an NX-based digital product development approach clearly sets us apart from our competition," said Michael Runge, managing partner, CA Engineering. The stroller, duped "Jogger Joe", went from concept to production in six months, met all the customer requirements for quality and engineering, and achieved both timeline and budget specifications. Runge sees the NX digital product development environment as a key differentiator for his firm, and an important driver for business growth.
Tohoku Ricoh Co., Ltd. Reduces Design to Manufacturing Time by One-third

The Japanese multi-national company, Ricoh Co. Ltd., is a well-known supplier of office automation equipment. Like all manufacturers in the electronics market, Ricoh is constantly looking for ways to speed the delivery of new products to market, without sacrificing accuracy or creativity. To meet its goals of improving lead times, accuracy and efficiency, the company moved to a 3D design process using Solid Edge. Now lead times from design to production have been reduced from 18 months to 12, engineering change orders have shrunk by 90 percent and 50 percent of the cost has been slashed from the development cycle.
New Release of Teamcenter Requirements Integrates Systems Engineering with the Product Lifecycle
July's release of Teamcenter Requirements marks an industry first - the integration of requirements/systems engineering with lifecycle information management - for enterprise-wide requirements traceability throughout a product's lifecycle.
Managing Product and Process - NX Managed Development Environment
Process transformation requires more than CAD, CAM, and CAE software applications. Companies also need tools that control product information and enable continuous process management and improvement.
NX augments all product development applications - models, drawings, specification documents, simulation and test scenarios, data and results, tooling and manufacturing data, embedded knowledge - with the NX Managed Development Environment, a set of management tools that are fully integrated, unobtrusive, and scaleable to match the organization's requirements.
Solid Edge Version 16 to Provide Enhanced Systems Design Capability
Due to the ever-increasing complexity of product designs, the creation of virtual prototypes has become critical to an efficient error-free design process, reports a new paper from UK-based information and communications research firm Cambashi Ltd. Systems design -- where a group of interacting components are modeled as a "whole" with sufficient information to describe how they relate to one another and how they need to perform to meet design criteria - has therefore become an increasingly critical part of the product design mix. In 2000 Solid Edge began introducing a progression of essential components for systems design, which continues with Version 16.
New Versions of Factory CAD and Factory Flow Released
The E-factory development team recently released Factory CAD and Factory Flow Versions 9.0. Together, the two software solutions help users design more accurate digital representations of their plants, capture their layouts for future re-use, and optimize the flow of material through them.
UGS Announces Training for I-deas to NX 2, NX Manager I-deas 3.0
UGS Education Services announces the availability of new training courses targeting those I-deas customers that desire to make the move to Unigraphics NX 2 or to Teamcenter Engineering. The pacing and content of these courses have been designed specifically for experienced I-deas users.
2005 NX Global Calendar Program in Full Swing
Entries are starting to arrive for the 2005 NX Global Calendar Program. Last year’s program generated over 100 high-quality customer images. Many have been used in the calendar, as well as in other UGS marketing materials. Participation in the program offers your company widespread exposure – not only through the calendar itself, but also through related activities such as editorial opportunities. For example, two of the 2004 winning images have been featured on the cover of Cadalyst magazine – April and June issues. Deadline for submissions is September 15. Image guidelines and entry guidelines are available on the calendar program site.
